The NZ Sport and Vintage Aviation Society exists to foster the preservation in flying condition of classic and vintage light aircraft, and to develop the George Hood Aviation Museum.

SVAS's next biennial Wings Over Wairarapa Air Show is planned for Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th of January 2009. Visit wings.org.nz
Our Story:
In 1966 Wairarapa farmer Tom Williams purchased Tiger Moth ZK-BAT (still in the SVAS collection) reflecting his desire of to preserve and fly vintage aircraft.  In the early 70's, Tom met with Bob McGarry and Bill Dittmer in Masterton to float the idea of a museum that had flying vintage aircraft.  David Rendel of the Civil Aviation Department was sympathetic and encouraging. The origin of the SVAS title reflected the desire to include home-built (sport) as well as newonlinecasinos.nz vintage aircraft. Ron Alexander designed the logo for the Society; after his death in a flying accident in 1976, the SVAS took over the Golden Age Flying Society's only asset, the Percival Proctor.

Hood Aerodrome at Masterton was considered the best place to base the SVAS and the SVAS hangar was opened in early 1978, and completed in December that year. The opening coincided with the Societys first air pageant, which included a flypast of twenty aircraft led by the first patron of the Society, Piet Van Asch, in his General newonlinepokies.co.nz Aircraft Monospar.

The Met Service needed a hangar for its glider, used for meteorological tests, and SVAS members contracted to construct the hangar. Subsequently the Met Service superseded the glider and the SVAS purchased the hangar at cost.

In 1979 the Society acquired a surplus RNZAF Harvard; over the next three years it was restored to air worthy condition.Harvard 33 (ZK-SGQ) remains the SVAS flagship.
