AIR RACE Stop Over - 3 April

Report by David Cornick

On Saturday 3 April the SVAS hosted the air race for their lunch stop on the Gisborne to Omaka leg. With approximately one hundred and fifty people and sixty five aircraft arriving from 10.30am and due to depart at 2, it was a busy time for the volunteers.

The aircraft marshallers lined the arrivals up in three neat rows. In our hangar BBQs, warming ovens and microwaves were at full power (and yes the electrical system coped!) as the flock of hungry aviators paid their money and lined up for lunch.

The weather was excellent and the fellowship was great.

By 2pm all race participants and officials were fed and returned to the sky at 30 second intervals. The first few were flagged away by Mayor Bob Francis.

It was a tremendous sight to see the line of aircraft taxiing out to the southern end of the main seal.

We have had a really nice "big thank-you" from the air race committee.
