SVAS AGM SUNDAY 20 JUNE
The Old Stick and Rudder Company The Old Stick and Rudder Company are now our neighbors on Hood Aerodrome. One hangar is completed and their main hangar is nearly complete. SVAS has assisted ‘Stick and Rudder’ in their move by temporarily housing the Provost, a Chipmunk the Avro 504 replica and the Corsair, while the new hangars were being built. We look forward to a warm and continuing relationship with our new neighbors and their obvious commitment to classic and vintage aviation. Vintage Car Museum Our new museum building is temporarily the home of the Masterton Historic and Classic Transport Museum. We entered into an agreement to provide a temporary home for the vintage cars, to earn some revenue, and to attract visitors to Hood Aerodrome. However this arrangement is coming to a close and by the end of the year we expect to be making a start on the internal fit-out of our Museum. In the meantime, the collection of vintage cars is worth seeing!Recent Events Read all about it!SVAS activities feature in : Pacific Wings April 2004 with photos and text about the Vintage Air Rally, and a superb photo of our CFI John Bargh at work in his new Air Tractor, contributed by David Cornick in the May issue. NZ Aviation: April and May issues also carry photos and news of SVAS activities. SVAS Open Weekend: 17-18 January, 2004 Over Wellington Anniversary Weekend SVAS held an ‘Open Day’ for the aviation-minded and general public. Our own and other rare vintage aircraft owned by various friends of SVAS were the core of a 2-3 hour aerial display on Sunday 18 Jan. About 30 aircraft were on display on the ground, with a dozen or so providing the air display. The RNZAF Historic Flight provided a Harvard and a Sioux & recent agricultural arrivals provided some spectacular moments. We estimated some 1500 people attended, and the threatening bad weather held off until the end. All in all a successful day which made money for us.
Wellington Aero Club Open Day 17March Our Harvard and a Tiger supported the Wellington Aero Club’s successful open day at Rongotai.

Recent Events: AIR RACE Stop Over - 3 April Report by David CornickOn Saturday 3 April the SVAS hosted the air race for their lunch stop on the Gisborne to Omaka leg. With approximately one hundred and fifty people and sixty five aircraft arriving from 10.30am and due to depart at 2, it was a busy time for the volunteers. A big thankyou for your efforts and time. The aircraft marshallers lined the arrivals up in three neat rows; in our hangar BBQs, warming ovens and microwaves were at full power (and yes the electrical system coped!) as the flock of hungry aviators paid their money and lined up for lunch. The weather was excellent and the fellowship was great. By 2pm all race participants and officials were fed and returned to the sky at 30second intervals. The first few were flagged away by Mayor Bob Francis. It was a tremendous sight to see the line of aircraft taxiing out to the southern end of the main seal. We have had a verbal "big thankyou" from the air race committee. Special thanks to: SVAS has also to thank Peter Rewi and the team at Breadcraft for their sponsorship, which in turn helped us make a useful profit for the Society. THE SVAS Committee wish to acknowledge the support of sponsors, businesses and organisations which have given us much practical support in recent months: Whittakers – makers of honest to goodness chocolate since 1896 Breadcraft Wairarapa Ltd The Masterton District Council The Royal New Zealand Air Force Masterton Historic and Classic Transport Museum |
